How the Chocolate Bar Became a Classic
It’s hard to imagine life without the humble chocolate bar. Whether it’s a quick pick-me-up, a thoughtful gift, or a little indulgence at the end of the day, chocolate bars are a staple of modern life. But have you ever wondered how they came to be?
Let’s unwrap the fascinating history of chocolate, see how it evolved into the world’s favourite sweet treat, and find out why the British chocolate bar has become one of the best-loved (and best-tasting) varieties around.
The Origins of Chocolate
The story of chocolate begins over 3,000 years ago with the ancient civilisations of Central and South America. The Mayans and Aztecs revered cacao as a sacred crop, using it to create a bitter, spiced drink called xocolatl, believed to have divine and energising qualities. It was consumed during ceremonies and even used as currency.
When Spanish explorers brought cacao back to Europe in the 16th century, sugar was added to temper the bitterness, turning it into a luxurious hot drink reserved for the elite. For centuries, chocolate was still only enjoyed as a drink, rich, frothy, and expensive.
The Invention of the Chocolate Bar
It wasn’t until the 19th century that chocolate as we know it began to take shape. Advances in manufacturing meant cocoa butter could be separated and recombined with cocoa solids and sugar to create a smooth, solid product.
In 1847, the British company Fry & Sons is credited with producing the world’s first chocolate bar—marking a revolution in how chocolate was consumed. The bar was easy to package, easy to eat, and affordable enough to reach beyond the aristocracy.
From there, chocolate bars became hugely popular in the UK, with companies like Cadbury and Rowntree creating some of the most iconic brands that are still household names today. Britain developed a reputation for high-quality, creamy milk chocolate bars- something that sets it apart from its American counterparts, which often use more sugar and less cocoa.
Why British Chocolate Bars Are So Good
If you’ve ever compared British chocolate to American chocolate, you’ve probably noticed the difference. British chocolate typically has a higher cocoa content, less sugar, and a smoother, creamier texture. The result is a richer, more satisfying taste that chocolate lovers around the world appreciate.
We’re proud to continue this tradition of excellence, crafting our chocolate bars from ethically sourced Belgian chocolate. Every bar we make combines premium ingredients, exceptional flavours, and a purpose-driven mission to create something truly special.
