What Are Antioxidants?

“Antioxidant” is not one single ingredient. It is a broad term for different substances that can help counteract free radicals, including certain vitamins, minerals and plant compounds.

Rather than being a trendy “health buzzword,” antioxidants are part of a normal, ongoing balancing act: your body is constantly making and managing reactive molecules, and antioxidants are one of the tools it uses to keep things steady. 

Antioxidants: what they do

To understand antioxidants, it helps to start with free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable molecules created naturally in the body during normal processes like converting food into energy. They can also increase due to external factors such as pollution, cigarette smoke, UV exposure, illness, and stress.

In small amounts, free radicals aren’t automatically “bad.” Your body can handle them. The issue comes when the balance tips - when there are more free radicals than your body’s defences can comfortably manage.

That imbalance is often described as oxidative stress. In simple terms, oxidative stress is what happens when reactive molecules build up and your body’s ability to neutralise them can’t keep pace.

Antioxidants help by neutralising free radicals, which supports the body’s defences against oxidative stress and may help prevent or delay some types of cell damage.

Where antioxidants come from

Antioxidants come from two main places: your body and your diet.

1) Antioxidants your body makes

Your body has built-in systems that act as antioxidant defences. This is one reason you don’t need to “panic” about antioxidants, your body is already designed to handle reactive molecules as part of normal life.

2) Antioxidants from food

You also get antioxidants through food, especially plant foods. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and legumes contain a wide range of compounds that can act as antioxidants.

Some familiar antioxidant nutrients include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Beta-carotene (which the body can convert into vitamin A)
  • Selenium

You’ll also hear about larger families of plant compounds with antioxidant activity, such as polyphenols and flavonoids. These are naturally occurring compounds found across many plant foods.

What does “antioxidant-rich” actually mean?

When people say a food is “rich in antioxidants,” they usually mean it contains a mix of those protective nutrients and plant compounds; often alongside fibre, minerals, and other helpful nutrition.

That’s why antioxidant-rich foods often overlap with foods that are generally recommended for overall health: colourful fruit and veg, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and plant-based staples.

But it’s worth keeping one idea front and centre:

Health isn’t a single ingredient.

Antioxidants matter, but they’re not a magic switch. It’s more helpful to think in patterns: variety and consistency tend to beat chasing one “superfood.”

Antioxidants in real life: why you might notice them in cocoa and chocolate

You’ll often see antioxidants mentioned in relation to cocoa, tea, berries, and other plant foods. That’s because plants naturally contain protective compounds (including polyphenols), and cocoa is one ingredient that tends to come up a lot in these conversations.

In chocolate terms, it helps to remember that antioxidant compounds live mainly in the cocoa solids portion. Cocoa percentage can be a useful clue, but it does not tell you the exact flavanol or antioxidant content of a finished chocolate, because processing methods also affect what remains. 

That said, chocolate is still a treat, so the more useful question becomes: how do you enjoy it in a way that fits real life? If you’re choosing dark chocolate for its richer cocoa profile, a sensible portion matters too.

Basically, if you’re choosing chocolate, choose quality, enjoy it properly, and keep the bigger picture in mind.

What about antioxidant supplements?

Antioxidants are available in supplement form - vitamin C tablets, vitamin E capsules, beta-carotene, and more - but higher doses aren’t always better.

Research on antioxidant supplements hasn’t consistently shown the benefits people expect, and high-dose supplements can carry risks in some situations.

Food tends to be a safer, more balanced way to get antioxidants because foods come with a whole package of supportive nutrients and compounds, and they’re naturally limited by normal portion sizes.

If you’re considering supplements (especially high doses), it’s sensible to check with a healthcare professional - particularly if you take medication or have health conditions.

Why antioxidants are still worth knowing about

Antioxidants are part of your body’s everyday maintenance system. They help manage oxidative stress and support the body’s ability to cope with normal wear and tear.

And in practical terms, the simplest way to support that system is:

  • eat a varied diet with plenty of plant foods
  • focus on consistency, not perfection
  • be wary of miracle claims
  • enjoy treats as treats - with actual enjoyment

The NCCIH notes that high-dose beta-carotene may increase lung cancer risk in some people, and the US Preventive Services Task Force has recommended against using beta-carotene or vitamin E supplements for cancer prevention.
