Boost Stem Cells with Dark Chocolate

Can Dark Chocolate Boost Stem Cell Production?

Yes, dark chocolate may help increase stem cell production - especially when it’s made with high-quality cacao. Some fascinating research shows that dark chocolate could actually double the number of stem cells in your bloodstream at any given time.

Let’s unwrap the science (and the chocolate) to find out more.

First, What Are Stem Cells—and Why Do They Matter?

Stem cells are your body’s natural repair squad. They’re able to transform into different types of cells—like skin, muscle, or brain cells - which makes them vital for healing, tissue regeneration, and overall wellbeing. The more stem cells in circulation, the better your body can respond to damage or illness.

In simple terms? Healthy stem cell activity helps keep you energised, resilient, and well.

How Does Dark Chocolate Come Into It?

A study led by vascular health experts found that drinking two cups of dark hot chocolate, made with high-cacao content chocolate, doubled the number of circulating stem cells in participants. That's no small feat.

This effect is thanks to a powerful combination of nutrients in premium dark chocolate, especially when it contains 70–80% cacao or more.

Here’s what’s doing the heavy lifting:

1. Polyphenols (especially Flavanols)

These natural plant compounds act as antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Flavanols, especially epicatechin, support blood flow, protect cells, and create an environment in the body where stem cells can thrive.

Improved circulation also helps stem cells travel to where they’re needed most, like tiny paramedics getting a speed boost.

2. Magnesium

Cacao is one of nature’s richest sources of magnesium, a mineral essential for over 300 processes in the human body, including energy production, muscle function, and nervous system health.

Magnesium also supports:

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Mood regulation

  • Better sleep

  • And, relevant here, healthy stem cell activity

A magnesium-rich diet has even been linked to slower biological ageing, making that square of dark chocolate a little more golden.

But Quality Matters: Not All Chocolate Is Created Equal

To get the benefits, you need the real stuff, that means chocolate with 70% cocoa or more, made with high-quality, ethically sourced ingredients.

Many mass-produced chocolates use sugar, vegetable oils, or milk solids as the main ingredients, which dilutes the benefits of cacao. These types of chocolates may taste sweet, but they contain very little of the good stuff like flavanols and magnesium.

Always check the ingredients list: cocoa mass or cacao should be right at the top.

How Much Dark Chocolate Should You Eat?

Most research suggests that 30–60g per day is enough to enjoy the health perks of dark chocolate without overloading on sugar. And if you want to go the hot cocoa route like the study participants, make sure you’re using high-cacao chocolate or cacao powder (not the overly sugary kind).

Dark Chocolate and Wellness: A Quick Recap

  • Boosts stem cell production: High-cacao chocolate can increase the number of circulating stem cells, helping with healing and regeneration.

  • Rich in flavanols: These antioxidants support heart health, reduce inflammation, and help stem cells flourish.

  • High in magnesium: Essential for energy, mood, and cellular health.

  • Needs to be the real deal: Look for 70%+ cocoa content and check that cocoa mass is the first ingredient.

Is It a Superfood? Maybe—But It’s Definitely a Super Treat

The raw cacao bean has been called one of nature’s most potent superfoods, and it’s not hard to see why. When handled with care, it becomes something not just indulgent—but genuinely beneficial.

So the next time you need a pick-me-up or a meaningful gift, consider a bar of premium dark chocolate. It’s a simple pleasure with powerful potential.

  • Hi Dale, we would recommend speaking to your GP about providers for a blood test. Unfortunately this is not our area of expertise.

  • I take 3 level (backing) Tablespoons of 100% dark chocolate cocoa dissolved in 8 ounces of distilled water (dissolves much easier) twice a day. Is this ok, I’m 77 and seem to have good wound healing. I would like to have my blood HSC tested but have had no luck finding a provider. What test should I ask for? Thanks Dale
